Sun Guidelines for a Healthy Summer Tan

Summer is just around the corner! Beach days, splash pads, and farmers markets are too, which means a lot of time spent in the sun! The sun has become quite a confusing topic, especially in the crunchy world.

The sun provides lots of benefits for us, primarily as a source of vitamin D. This crucial vitamin is responsible for aiding in metabolic regulation, boosting immunity, and creating strong bones (Mama Natural 2021). The natural light exposure from the sun also boosts alertness, drive, and focus.

Our mood improves in the sun, not  just through beach and fresh berries! The UVB rays surge our serotonin which help regulate the cortisol in our body to a low-stress amount, (Arizona Pain & Posture 2024).

Did you know many of the traditional sunscreens are actually harmful? Many of them contain ingredients like oxybenzone which in some studies impacts the production of sperm. Another is octinoxate which in animal studies shows behavioral changes as it alters the function of the thyroid. Octocrylene, Octisalate, and Homosalate are other chemicals that absorb into the skin and produce carcinogenic effects, (Mama Natural 2021).

Did you know there are things you can do to boost your body’s ability to protect your skin from UV damage? Before you reach for the organic sunscreen, consider the below.

  1. Antioxidants!

  2. Eating a diet high in antioxidant foods can help protect your skin from the damages of UV radiation. Some of these include; tomatoes, sweet potatoes, almonds, grapes, salmon, berries, pomegranates, carrots, and citrus fruits.

  3. Chunky Cow

  4. Along with these yummy fruits and veggies up your healthy fat intake. Clean meat fats and coconut oil will give your skin an extra layer of protection.

  5. Vitamin D

  6. Did you know cod liver oil is a great source of vitamin D? Consuming whole food sources of vitamin D such as cod liver oil is a great way to reduce chances of sunburn.

  7. Minerals

  8. If you are lacking in essential minerals such as zinc and magnesium you can be at risk for sun rashes and photosensitivity. Up your consumption of bone broths and grass-fed liver to get the extra magnesium and zinc that you need.

  9. Krill Oil

  10. Recent studies show that krill oil acts as an internal sunscreen. When it is consumed it decreases the chance of getting sunburned and increases the ability of tanning.

  11. Tallow

  12. Tallow, or beef fat, has many beneficial ingredients for your skin. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E & K. Thus tallow is packed with many antioxidants. It also is anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory which helps in collagen production and speeds up recovery when skin becomes red and irritated, (Holy Naturals 2023). Many people use this daily to help protect themselves from the sun or use it as a post sun treatment!

  13. Seed Oils

  14. Another way to reduce sunburn is to limit your consumption of seed oils.

Below are some clean sunscreens. Many of these choices have a tinted option so they can pull double duty as a foundation.
